Wisely Investing Your Emotional Resources (Matthew 10:14)

In the post Decreasing Static, we touched on the fact that relationship with certain people can create “static” (or internal noise) that inhibits your ability to hear God. If you have someone who is constantly causing drama or hurt, or speaking things over you that are untrue – all these things can lead to internal static. And this is only one reason we should consider being more intentional with our emotional resources.

As believers, we often get so focused on the idea that everyone is redeemable and of value (which they are), that we can forget the fact that it may not be our job to be part of that person’s journey. In our post True Intimacy, we talk about the fact that someone else doesn’t simply get to “decide” you are going to be their friend – that isn’t true intimacy. True intimacy is shared. In the same way, we can and should be intentional to seek the Father on where He wants us focusing our time and attention in our relationships. We find a great example of this in Matthew 10:14 (TPT).

And if anyone doesn’t listen to you and rejects your message, when you leave that house or town, shake the dust off your feet as a prophetic act that you will not take their defilement with you.

There are moments when you are not supposed to keep trying. Make no mistake, I am not saying that at the first hint of trouble you should run, nor am I referring to marital relationships which are covenant relationships, but rather I’m referring to relationships that you choose to have in your life. And in those relationships you choose, choose wisely.

Be discerning about where you sow your resources whether that is your financial resources or your emotional ones. The enemy loves nothing more than to run you ragged doing “good” things all the while keeping you from God’s best. So stop and look at the fruit of the relationships you have – are they good, are they life-giving, etc. Even if a relationship tends to be one-sided, that doesn’t necessarily mean you shouldn’t pursue it. Rather do so with wisdom and intentionality, but be mindful of the draw it has on you.

This brings to mind the story of the wise and foolish virgins in Matthew 25. It could seem “unkind” that the wise virgins refused to share their oil, but rather they were being wise by knowing what was needed and preparing for it rather than throwing away what they had on people who weren’t even responsible enough to have planned ahead. Be wise. Be intentional. And be fruitful in your relationships as you yield to His plans in those connections.
