Hardened Hearts (Mark 6:51-52)

I was reading in Mark 6 (v30-52). First, the story about Jesus feeding the five thousand (please note that only referred to the number of men and did not include the women and children which would have made it many more). This story is followed by Jesus walking on the water.

He startled his disciples as he approached the boat on foot. As I sat here on my couch reading my bible I wondered how I would feel if He floated over to me here – something equally logic defying 🙂

The story ends in v51-52 by saying:

And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.

They’re witnessing an amazing miracle and basically missing it because of their hardened hearts. Which got me wondering, how much do WE miss because of our hardened hearts? How many of His miracles happen right before us and we totally miss them? And more importantly, what can *I* do to ensure my heart isn’t hardened?

Lord, give us eyes to see and ears to hear what You’re doing in the earth. We choose to soften our hearts – clay in Your hands – mold us and shape us, whatever brings You glory! We don’t want to miss a thing…

  1. You got my curiosity up, so I went to the concordance. It’s interesting that the Greek word translated “hardened” is also translate “blind” in other verses. I agree with your prayer–Lord, give me eyes to see and hears to hear, and a soft heart. Thanks for ministering to us, Meghan! Good word!

  2. Amen to Helen and Meghan’s comments! My thoughts are-wow-if the twelve apostles who had Jesus physically present doing the miracles in front of them, teaching them, living life with them and THEIR hearts were hardened….ouch…there’s definitely some places where I am still self-deceived/blinded/hardened…. so I echo your prayer too!

“Lord, give us eyes to see and ears to hear what You’re doing in the earth. We choose to soften our hearts – clay in Your hands – mold us and shape us, whatever brings You glory! We don’t want to miss a thing…”

  3. We sang “Open the Eyes of My Heart” at the service today. I love singing/praying that song…”Open the eyes of my heart, Lord, I want to see you…” Such a simple, yet life-defining, prayer if you desire with you whole heart and live it with your whole life….

    Much love, sistoiree!
