Signs & Wonders vs. Intimacy

So this morning I’m sitting on my couch trying to have a good snuggle with my big, beautiful, furry pooch. Only one problem. He’s not remotely interested. All he can do is stare at the ceiling and wait for the light spot to appear.

You see the room is flooded with that bright mid-morning light, which Sketch (my 115 lb Rottweiler) knows is particularly good at reflecting off iPods, cell phones, silverware and the like. He is expectant. Chasing the light has become his favorite game. The moment seems right so he is eagerly waiting… and looking to me, because he knows I make the light appear.

Sometimes he’ll back over to me so I can scratch his butt while he frantically looks everywhere to see if the light has shown up. Frankly, it’s inhibiting my ability to have snuggles with my beast, which – let’s face it – is one of the main reasons for having a dog!

So as all this is playing out, I hear the Lord whisper to me that this is how He feels about signs and wonders. We are so often enamored with His signs and wonders we spend our time watching and waiting for them instead of seeking true intimacy with the One from whom they come.

Signs and wonders are just as easy for God to do as the light spot on the ceiling are for me to make for the dog… and I don’t mind doing them! But I do mind when my doing them distracts him from the main reason I want him in my life… for relationship with me.

Selah.

For your viewing pleasure… 5 quick videos of the dog (each less than a minute) waiting for the light, seeing the light, and then waiting some more 🙂

  1. This is so very true! I hear that and variations of that and have found myself guilty. I can actually become numb to our relationship in my pursuit of His moving and learning His ways. I justify myself that I have my mind on Him but it’s not the same. He has at various times spoken thru my relationship with my furry ones.

  2. That is a good word Meghan. Sometimes we get in the moment waiting for it to happen and we need to turn our eyes to God. He is just speaking to me so much, I feel like I am not going to be able to take it all in. But he will bring it back to me. Thank you for sharing 🙂
