Little Things Matter

In the last few days, I’ve had a couple object lessons from the Father that made the same point, so I feel like He’s leading me to share. It’s all about little things mattering 🙂

The Chair

Before I tell you about the first one, I need to tell you I am HIGHLY scent sensitive. Fragrance oils (which are in most everything) are the worst culprits. When I get around fragrance oils, I have reactions everywhere from discomfort to debilitating migraines. As a result, my home is basically fragrance free.

A month ago a dear friend gifted me a fantastic recliner. The thing looks seriously brand new and is of wonderful quality. I spend time in this friend’s home on a weekly basis and though I am aware of scents in her house, I’ve never had severe reaction to them.

But when we brought the recliner into my fragrance free home, suddenly its scent mandated the atmosphere! I realize that sounds dramatic, but that’s exactly what happened. Because of where it was placed in my home, I no longer could be in my office for more than a few minutes without getting a migraine (which happened on more than one occasion), the smell started coming down into the lower level of our home causing me to avoid other areas of the house and stay holed up in the basement (2 floors down from the chair).

The verse this brings to mind is the second part of 1 Corinthians 5:6

Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?

The other thing worth noting is my husband cleaned it multiple times, but cleaning the surface didn’t make a dent in removing the scent because it was coming from it’s inside. The scripture that brings to mind is Matthew 23:27

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.

It does no good to clean the outside, when the inside is what is the problem.

My Back

Then last night I tweaked my back. I wasn’t doing anything strenuous, I just turned and reach for something and BAM something went out of alignment and let me tell you IT HURTS! It hurts to breathe, laugh, move left or right, sit this way or that way, get up or sit down… it all hurts.  The only time it doesn’t hurt is when I am perfectly straight.

The verse this brings to mind is Proverbs 4:25-27

Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.

Little Things

In both these examples – one small misalignment in my back and one small chair inside a whole house – something that appears small is having a LARGE impact, and in both situations it’s a negative one.  This gives me pause to consider this from a spiritual perspective. What “small” spiritual things have I allowed in that are having major repercussions? Little things always seem small and insignificant, but like a pebble thrown into a pond, the ripples are far-reaching.

This brings to mind the difference between permissible and beneficial things. There are times we may do things that are permissible in one season, but as we refuse to lay them down in the next season the same things may actually have a negative impact because WE are not in the same place anymore.

Perhaps in your life you’re feeling some pain, but may not even been aware at what opened the door to it. I pray that Holy Spirit open all our eyes to show us “little things” we may have taken for granted. This is not a time for compromise. We must live holy, set apart lives.

Bless you as you seek Him!

  1. Thank you Meghan for posting this.

It really does give me things too really think about. I know that I was told serveral times to get healthy, He kept telling me :/ Well I have to tell you that I have started my Journey to health and I am seeing a difference in my sleep, my energy during the day. I know this may seem little, but it is a BIG step for me. Being obedient to his voice. I love you Meghan and I am praying for complete healing in you.

  2. Yes, AMEN!

This highlights the point that the small things are NOT small things. What is big is small and what is small is BIG!!

I also like the fact that the chair could not just be easily cleaned – that it was things on the inside that were reflecting outward. It needs an innard cleaning – just like I know I need.

This encourages me to look for small (and big) things that are leavening my loaf and to ask Yahweh to come and clean my innards.
