What Aroma are You Leaving? (2 Corinthians 2:15-16)

As I mentioned in a previous blog (In Your Presence), my puppy Max got skunked. Now he is exceedingly fragrant. And that fragrance lingers. At church on Sunday I caught a whiff of it on one of my flags, I was puzzled, but suddenly realized Allen had touched the flag HOURS after touching the dog – and just those two brief touches transferred that aroma. That is a STRONG scent!

It makes me think of dogs and how they “mark” their territory (in this case I’m picturing how they’ll rub against you to transfer their scent). Scent can be used to “mark”. Scent is a powerful, unseen tool.

As one who has pretty severe scent issues (fragrance oils give me migraines, even some essential oils if they’re floral), I am probably more aware than most to how fragrance can linger (although many pregnant women get “superscent” so they can relate too). It really can draw or repel you. There have been people who I love dearly, but avoid like the plague because of the fragrance they wear. Aroma mandates the atmosphere. In a spiritual sense, the same holds true as we see in 2 Corinthians 2:15-16 (AMP):

For we are the sweet fragrance of Christ which ascends to God, discernible both among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; to the latter one an aroma from death to death a fatal, offensive odor, but to the other an aroma from life to life a vital fragrance, living and fresh…

Our lives and relationships are to be such that we are drenched in His scent. That His fragrance would be constantly wafting off us. Mandating the atmosphere.

And though it may seem contrary to this verse, I believe much like how a pleasant cologne or perfume can draw us, in the same way I believe His fragrance of love can draw those who He is calling them to Himself.

My question to leave you with today is: what aroma is surrounding you? Are you soaking in His presence? Letting His scent permeate your very being? I challenge us all to be intentional about being with Him, carrying His scent – His mark. May people know we are His just by our aroma. Amen!

  1. Sweet Fragrance of heaven…..so glad there will Not be allergies in heaven! But….let heaven come to earth and may we be “fragrance carriers” of Him! Amen!
