Immediate Obedience (Genesis 17)

As I was reading in Genesis 17 this evening, one line in verse 26 stood out to me:

That very same day Abraham was circumcised, and his son Ishmael

Let me back up and give a little context.  In the end of ch 15, the Father made the covenant with Abram (who in ch 17 becomes Abraham). The beginning of ch 16, Sarai (later to become Sarah) is talking her hubby Abram into trying to MAKE a prophetic word happen, which could be a blog in itself, but if you’re a wife – you should be aware of the implications of this story.  Then at the end of ch 16, Hagar is struggling against Sarai’s leadership. Now fast forward 13 years and in ch 17 the Father reiterates His covenant, this time clearly specifying that it will occur through Sarah’s womb (she just got her new name).

Another noteworthy moment is Abraham’s response to the Father telling him it will be fulfilled through Sarah. In verse 17 he basically tells God His plan is impossible and suggests in v18 that He go with Abraham’s version of the plan… Ishmael. Now I don’t know about you, but I know I’ve had moments like this where I try and talk the Father into blessing MY version of the plan instead of submitting to and accepting His version.

Anyhow, to his credit Abraham doesn’t argue with God long. Once the Father makes clear His plan is going to happen how HE has said, Abraham immediately goes to complete his part of the covenant, which was circumcision – for himself (99 years old) and all the men in his charge. It says “that very same day”.

So my question for you to consider is what has the Father talked to you about that you’ve hesitated to move on? What is causing you to hold back? Are you concerned you may not have heard His voice? Trust that He is fully able to direct your steps when you are truly seeking to submit your will to His 🙂

Father, forgive us for hesitating in following Your commands. Delayed obedience is disobedience. We desire to please You and to obey Your will. Help us to walk in Your ways and in Your truth. Be glorified in our lives!
