Those Who Love, Wait (1 Cor 2:9, Is 64:4)

So much can be learned by seeing how Old Testament verses are quoted in the New Testament! I had an “ah ha” moment early this week that caused me to ponder on something I discovered when I dug a little further into 1 Corinthians 2:9 (NKJV), but first let me start with that verse:

But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

When I read this verse (after first being encouraged by the message itself), Holy Spirit highlighted to me the “as it is written” and so I decided to dig around until I found the original.  I discovered it in Isaiah 64:4 (NKJV):

For since the beginning of the world Men have not heard nor perceived by the ear, Nor has the eye seen any God besides You, Who acts for the one who waits for Him.

Immediately, He highlighted to me that one verse says for those who LOVE Him and one says WAIT on Him. Suddenly I realized what He was saying: those who love Him, wait for Him.  In fact in John 15:9 we are commanded to abide in His love.

Abiding implies waiting – a tarrying – being more like Mary and less like Martha. In our busy world it’s too easy to “not have time” to wait on the Lord, but the fact is if we don’t we are showing we don’t love Him. Wow.

Father, please forgive us for allowing ourselves to be distracted, to choose things above You. Forgive us for hurting Your heart by showing with our choices that You aren’t important – we don’t really feel that way! Help us to choose more wisely… to be like Mary and choose the better part. That we might abide and bear fruit that would bring glory to You. Thank You Father.

  1. The funny thing is, I have come across both of those verses this week, but I needed you to connect the dots for me. Thank you so much, this is a bit of needed encouragement this evening!

  2. While we work we are to WAIT that is, trust in IEUE and develop character. We all get distracted. I have several times. Character development is a big thing I need.
